In the wake of the Competition and Markets Authority’s announcement it will conduct a consumer enforcement investigation into the unregulated sector, The Society of Will Writers has swiftly taken the initiative to rally members together to produce responses to the project.
The first response from the SWW comes from its Professional Standards Board (PSB). Addressing the concerns raised around will writing and pre-paid probate, and detailing the actions they are taking as the advisory board to the SWW to help improve standards across the SWW membership, the response includes an overview of current and completed PSB projects. These projects include a new insertion of oversight and governance controls for the SWW Code of Practice, the mentoring scheme and an affiliate member audit. The PSB’s response shores up the firm stance being taken against harmful practices and how best members can be supported, as well as what protections SWW membership affords the consumer.

The SWW will shortly be following up with a response of its own ahead of the 4 September 2023 deadline. Members are reminded that to have their voices heard they should either submit their own response to the CMA, or join forces with the SWW and send in comments and experiences so that they can be submitted alongside our official response. The deadline for providing these to us has now been set for 25 August 2023, although Members can still respond directly to the CMA up to 4 September 2023 if preferred.

I see that only England and Wales are mentioned in the PSB response to the CMA.
Are Scotland and Northern Ireland excluded from this investigation/review?
